The finding occurs in the lab of the Hail Mary after Grace and his Eridian counterpart, Rocky, successfully collect an air sample from the Astrophage breeding zone in the upper atmosphere of the planet Adrian, which they have named after Rocky's mate. The discovery immediately reframes the entire mission, revealing that the reason Tau Ceti is not being destroyed by Astrophage is the presence of a natural predator that keeps the Astrophage population in check, a predator that can potentially be used to save both Earth and Erid.
The Search for a Predator
After Grace and Rocky establish communication and a shared language, they confirm that both are at Tau Ceti for the same reason: to understand why this star is immune to the Astrophage that is devastating their home stars. Grace hypothesizes that a predator must exist, as the population of Astrophage migrating to and from Adrian is balanced, unlike the uncontrolled growth seen elsewhere. To test this, they devise a plan to sample the air at the precise altitude where Astrophage breed, which is 91.2 kilometers above Adrian's surface. This requires a dangerous and complex operation: Grace pilots the Hail Mary into a low, engine-assisted orbit while a ten-kilometer-long chain, built from thousands of xenonite links manufactured by Rocky, is lowered into the atmosphere. A sampler probe at the end of the chain collects the air, and after a harrowing retrieval that nearly destroys the ship, Grace brings the sample into the lab.

Grace exclaims, "I found the predator! It ate Astrophage right in front of me!" He names the creature "Taumoeba," a portmanteau of Tau Ceti and amoeba. The Taumoeba is immediately identified as the key to saving their worlds, as it is a natural, self-replicating solution to the Astrophage infestation.
Consequences and the Path Forward
The discovery of Taumoeba fundamentally changes the mission's objective from investigation to implementation. Grace and Rocky realize that the Taumoeba from Adrian cannot survive in the atmospheres of Venus or Threeworld, the planets where Astrophage breeds in their respective solar systems, because those atmospheres contain nitrogen, which is toxic to the natural Taumoeba. This leads to a new, urgent project: using directed evolution to breed a strain of Taumoeba that is resistant to nitrogen. Grace sets up ten breeder tanks, each with a slightly higher concentration of nitrogen, and over many generations, they successfully create Taumoeba-82.5, a strain capable of surviving the nitrogen levels found on both Venus and Threeworld. This engineered predator becomes the cornerstone of the plan to save both Earth and Erid, and Grace eventually launches it toward Earth aboard the beetle probes, while he himself sets off to rescue Rocky and deliver the Taumoeba to the Eridian system.
